Thomas would become a significant and prosperous landowner in Giles County. He moved to the county as a young boy, and historical accounts indicate the Reed family moved to Giles Co. in the 1807 timeframe from Kentucky. His father was also named Thomas, and Thomas Sr.'s will says he was "of Giles County," but he died in Limestone County in 1836 where his will is filed. He may have been living with his daughter Elizabeth Reed Covington when he died.
Autosomal DNA indicates Thomas Reed Sr's wife was a Cheatham, almost certainly the daughter of Joel and Elizabeth Cheatham, based on all the DNA matches that Reed descendants have with their descendants. In addition to DNA evidence, Thomas Reed and Amy Cox had a daughter named Amy who married Thomas Henry Gilbert, and they had son named Cheatham Gilbert. This adds some circumstantial evidence to the assertion that she was a Cheatham.
