Tongan Statesman. He served as the Prime Minister of Tonga from December 30, 2014 to September 12, 2019. Born Samiuela Akilisi Pohiva, he worked as a teacher and later studied at the University of the South Pacific before joining the Tongan Teacher Training Staff. He was active in the Tongan pro-democracy movement in the 1970s and early 1980s and in 1984, was dismissed from his civil service job. In 1987, he was elected to the Tongan parliament and served in this body until becoming prime minister in 2014. His party, the Democratic Party of the Friendly Islands, had won a majority during that year's elections. He served as prime minister until his passing.
