Brazilian actress. Miriam de Souza Pires (her full name) was born on April 20, 1927 in Rio de Janeiro. She started her career in 1963, when she was already 36. She appeared in many soap operas and miniseries, among them "Irmaos coragem" (1970), "Locomotivas" (1977), "A sucessora" (1978), "Baila comigo" (1981), "Final feliz" (1982, in which she played one of her more dramatic roles, that of the suffered Marina, who has to raise Rafael, her limited son, played by Irving Sao Paulo), "Dona Beija" (1986), "Tieta" (1989, being very remembered her role of the cook Milú), "Salomé" (1991), "Pedra sobre pedra" (1992), "Sonho meu" (1993), "Tocaia grande" (1995), "Xica da Silva" (1996), "Mandacaru" (1997), "Uga Uga" (2000), "Um anjo caiu do céu" (2001), "Desejos de mulher" (2002), "Kubanacan" (2003), "Chocolate com pimenta" e "Senhora do destino" (both 2004, and the latter being her last). She also appeared in several films, among them "Aleluia Gretchen" (1976), "Chuvas de verao" (1978), where she appeared naked in a love scene with Jofre Soares (it was for this that she at first had doubts to accept the role), and very specially "Kiss of the Spider Woman" (1985). While working in "Senhora do destino", Miriam contracted toxoplasmosis (the illness attacked her brain), and remained two months in a Rio de Janeiro hospital until September 7, 2004 when the illness caused her death. She was 77 years old.
