Cypriot Statesman. He served as the 6th President of Cyprus from February 28, 2008 to February 28, 2013. He became politically active at a young age, joining the Pancyprian United Students Organization in 1960 at age 14. In 1964, he joined the AKEL (the Communist Party of Cyprus) and its youth arm, the EDON. Five years later, he was elected to the EDON's central committee. That same year, he went to the Soviet Union to further his education and, in 1974, obtained a Ph.D. in history from the Academy of Social Sciences in Moscow. He later returned to Cyprus and rose through the ranks of the EDON to the position of its general secretary. He also was a member of the AKEL during this time and later moved up through the party ranks to become head of the party. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1991 and ten years later, became president of the legislative body. In 2008, he was the AKEL's candidate for the position of president of Cyprus and was successful in the election that year. He went on to serve in this office for the next five years before deciding not to seek reelection in 2013.
