Pyeonggwon was heading to Jeju Island with his elementary school alumni group when he died in the Sewol Ferry tragedy of April 16, 2014. Out of 476 people on board, 304 died, mostly high school sophomores on a field trip. The Sewol Ferry tragedy was one of the most devastating maritime disasters in the history of the world.
Pyeonggwon's body was recovered and he was cremated and interred at the Incheon Family Cemetery Park with the rest of the Sewol general passenger victims.
