THE STONER CEMETERY.
A Historical Sketch.
In January, 1827, John Stoner, (brother of D. C. Stoner), died in the vicinity of the site since known as the Stoner Graveyard. There being no burying ground in the neighborhood, application was made to J. Souder and E. Bowe, (who were then owners of the land), for a donation of land for a burying ground, which was granted, and John Stoner was burled thereon. In the summer of the same year a daughter of Mr. Bowe also died and was buried there. Ever since that time the Stoner Graveyard has been regarded as a favorite spot for that purpose. The ground being free to all, many continued to bury for many miles around, until the original ground had become about filled up. The original trustees having all died or moved out of the country, and no successors chosen, there was no one who bad legal authority to take charge thereof, and no means of raising money to keep it in good condition only by voluntary contribution, consequently it became very much neglected, so much so that it was plain to be seen that if things continued as they had been for a number of years past, it would entirely go down in another generation and become a habitation for owls and fox-, or might possibly be plowed over. This state of things and the gloomy prospect of the future, caused great anxiety on the part of a number who had many friends buried there hence-it was resolved that
a legal Cemetery Association be organized which was done some months ago-said association assuming the name of Fairmount Cemetery Association. They are a legally incorporated body.
