Bess Louise Mitchell was born July 1, 1922, in Goodland, KS, the daughter of Herbert and Freida (Rankin) Ortberg. At the age of 6, both her parents had cancer and were unable to care for their three children. Louise was taken to Newcastle, NE, to live with her Uncle Albian Ortberg “Papa Doc” and his wife Bess. Her parents passed away and the siblings each went to live with other relatives. She was 11 when Papa Doc passed away and later that year, her Aunt Bess married Virgil Linman. Virgil and Bess adopted Louise and moved to a farm south of Arthur, IA. She graduated from Arthur High School and continued her education at Stewart Beauty School in Sioux City, IA. Louise met Robert (Bob) Boyd Mitchell in Sac City, IA, where she worked as a beautician. The couple were married in 1942 and started a family.
Bob joined the Army and while he served overseas, Louise moved back in with Virgil and Bess. Bob and Louise continued farming on the family farm two miles south of Arthur, until Bob’s health forced them to move to Tucson, AZ, where she lived for 23 years. Louise moved back to Arthur, IA, in 2003. In her later years she was a resident of Golden Horizons in Ida Grove and lastly at Willowdale Wellness Village in Battle Creek, Iowa.
Louise enjoyed being active in her children’s 4-H and school activities. She liked socializing and belonged to the Ladies Aid at Faith Lutheran Church of Odebolt, IA, the Friendly Neighbors Club, and Saddle Club. She enjoyed fellowship at the park center in Arizona, making crafts, and taking walks with the neighbors. Louise’s greatest joy in life was her family.
Survivors include a son Robert V. “Bob” Mitchell of Parkton, MD; two daughters Sharon "Sherry" (Richard) Thies of Arthur, IA and Patricia "Pat" Deisch of Lincoln, NE; seven grandchildren Shane (Jenn) Mitchell, Shannon (Chris), Shawn (Deb) Thies, Mindee (Lee) Cranston, Shad and Mitchell Chandler, and Danielle Deisch; thirteen great-grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren.
