In March 1962, not yet fourteen, Rosanna Benzi was struck by polio in one of its most serious forms, the spinal bulb. The disease caused her quadriplegia and severe respiratory failure and forced her to spend the rest of her life in a steel lung at the San Martino Hospital in Genoa. Rosanna Benzi became a public figure at the end of May 1963 when Pope John XXIII, having learned of his condition, sent her a letter to "thank her for her desire to live"; from that moment on, Rosanna began to develop her propensity for social commitment. In adulthood Benzi would become one of the most authoritative voices heard in campaigns to support the rights of the disabled. For this reason it was proposed for the office of senator for life by Democrazia Proletaria (extreme left party) during the secretariat of Mario Capanna in 80's.

Starting in 1976 Rosanna Benzi founded and directed a magazine "Gli Altri", from whose pages she launched some important campaigns to raise awareness of the issues of disability and social exclusion; among these we must mention the campaign against "architectural barriers" and that for the abatement of VAT on wheelchairs and on orthopedic garrisons. His inquiries into the handicap and sexuality of the disabled and the inadequate treatment that psychiatric patients could suffer in mental hospitals also had a significant impact. Among the books of Benzi we must list Il vizio di vivere (1984) and Girotondo in una stanza (1987).

Inspired by his story, in 1988 Dino Risi directed the fiction "Il vizio di vivere", where the role of Rosanna Benzi was played by actress Carol Alt.
