Jail guards Morris Broderson and Daniel Horgan were shot and killed by a prisoner attempting to escape the Bronx County Jail, located at the intersection of Arthur Avenue and 177th St. (present-day East Tremont Ave.).

The prisoner, John F. McCabe, was armed with a .38-caliber handgun that had been smuggled to him through a small hole in the window of his cell, via a pole extended from an adjoining rooftop. Broderson had entered the cell block to open cells. When he opened McCabe's cell, the man complained that he did not feel well. When Broderson moved closer, McCabe pulled out his concealed weapon and fired twice.

McCabe then used the dying guard's keys to exit the cell block. He made his way down the stairs and came to another locked door that the stolen keys could not open. Horgan, standing on the other side of the locked exit, ordered him to surrender. McCabe fired twice at the door lock, with no effect. He then fired two more times, this time at Horgan, killing him.

Unable to reach through the door for Horgan's keys, McCabe retraced his steps, hoping to escape through a fourth-floor window. Finding it sealed with bars, he realized that he was about to be captured. He drew a second gun, a .22-caliber, and killed himself.

Morris Broderson had served with the Bronx County Sheriff's Department for seven months. He was survived by his wife, Mildred, and their 10-year-old daughter, Florence.

Nine years after her father's murder, Florence Broderson lost her mother as well. In 1940, she married Robert Gould, with whom she had at least two children. She died in July 2000, probably in California.
