Former Riverton resident Judith Jewett Barratt died Monday, April 20, 2015, at Sunrise Senior Living in Chicago. She was 80.

A celebration is held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at Sunrise Senior Living, 2710 N. Clark St. in Chicago. Local services are set for 10 a.m., Friday, June 19 at St. James Episcopal Church in Riverton.

Judith Ann Jewett was born Feb. 25, 1936, in Madison, Wisconsin, to Madge McGrew Jewett of Stuart, Nebraska, and James Judge Jewett Jr, of Riverton.

Following her father on his Navy assignments during WWII, she attended school in several cities before the family settled in Riverton at the war's end.

She attended Riverton High School, (where Madge was longtime librarian) and was in marching band, theater, chorus, library club and newspaper, graduating RHS in 1954.

The family was also active in founding and growing Riverton's first Episcopal church, St. James.

After a year at Stephens College in Missouri, she transferred to the University of Wyoming, where she was an active member of the UW community, starring in theatrical and musical productions, playing bass drum in marching band, and joining the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

It was in a theater department show that she was cast opposite Richard Barratt, an ROTC cadet from Laramie.

After receiving her B.A. (psychology) in 1958 and her M.A. (psychology) in 1959, she and Lt. Barratt were married in 1960 and honeymooned en route to his initial posting to the Infantry Officers Basic Course at Fort Benning, Georgia.

The Barratts were posted to Schweinfurt, Germany; Colorado Springs, Colorado; Taif, Saudi Arabia; Beirut, Lebanon (where their daughter was born in 1972), and finally Fayetteville, North Carolina.

At each post, Mrs. Barratt contributed to thespian and vocal performance groups and Army wives clubs, as well as teaching English and modeling.

She completed the Basic Arabic Course at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, and worked toward a master's degree in archaeology at the American University of Beirut.

After settling in Fayetteville in 1973, Mrs. Barratt continued to pursue her love of acting, performing with and then serving as executive director of the Fort Bragg Playhouse.

Over her 13 years with the theater, she worked with a host of talented directors and actors, including Joshua Logan, Lucille Ball, Bob Hope, Joe Namath, Loretta Swit, and James McArthur.

Upon retiring in 1990, she taught psychology at Fayetteville Technical Community College. Throughout her 40 years in Fayetteville, she was an active member of the community, volunteering in many capacities.

She was a longtime member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, where she served on the vestry, sang in the choir, served on altar guild, and continued to perform in her beloved theatrical productions.

Travel was a lifelong love. Her journeys took her to more than 40 countries across North America, Europe and the Middle East. Among other memorable adventures, she travelled the 1,700-mile, unpaved, Alcan highway in the 1950s, and successfully sneaked a kitten onto a transatlantic flight in the 1960s.

Mrs. Barratt is survived by her daughter, Dr. Bethany Amal Barratt (Louis Dudzik), of Chicago, and two cousins, Dr. Bruce Switalski of Huntsville, Alabama, and Mr. Jim Smith, of Las Vegas, Nevada.

The family would appreciate any memorial donations be sent to St James Episcopal Church, T53; Davis Funeral Home, 2203 W. Main St, Riverton, WY 82501, or alternatively to the Foundation for the Episcopal Diocese of Wyoming
