Ely was born in Everingham, Yorkshire, England, son of John Broom, Sr. and Jane Newsome Broom. He came to the U.S. May - October 1833, disembarking at Oswego, New York in October 1833. Came to Fort Wayne, Indiana About 1838 where he began business as a wagonmaker and blacksmith. He married Jane Newsome, daughter of John Newsome and Isabella Carlton Newsome in about 1844. Ely Naturalized 2 Mar 1844 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Ely and Jane had 5 children, 1 - James dying in infancy. Their children were: John, James, Melinda, Eliza and Isabelle.
