When a young man he went to Bethel, Maine, where all of his children were born. In 1824, he brought his family to Milan, New Hampshire, which was named after his nephew, Milan Harris (for whom Harrisville, N. H. is also named for). It was also in the year 1824 that the town of Milan was named and incorporated.

The following is an excerpt about Cyrus from a biographical sketch of his son, Adams, published in 1888 in "History of Coos County, New Hampshire":
"Cyrus Twitchel was one of three authorized to call the first town meeting, and was the first justice of the peace appointed in Milan; he held the commission for many years, and was generally known as "Squire" Twitchell. His politics were of the old Whig party and Free Soil. A strong Abolitionist, he was one of the pioneers of that movement, and bold in avowing his opinions. He was a deeply devoted Christian, adhering strictly to the tenets of the Calvinistic Baptist church. He thought it wrong to speculate in land, believing that only by labor of the hands wealth should be acquired, and that the foresight, judgment and keenness of one man should not be turned to advantage against another. "Squire" Twitchel was a short, "thick set" man, kind hearted, a great reader, and retained his faculties to a remarkable age."
