Freddie Ernest Wagner was born to Julius Wagner and Beulah Montgomery Wagner in Hondo, New Mexico on October 6, 1930. The family moved to Texas in 1939, settling near San Angelo. Freddie served his Country in the United States Navy during the Korean War from August 1950 to June 1954. He served as a crewman aboard the Transport ship USS Breckenridge. His ship often engaged in battle and suffered casualties during missions. He was a replacement on a landing boat when his craft was attacked and sank with heavy personnel loss. While floating in the frigid sea, he was pulled aboard a rescue craft suffering from near fatal hypothermia. He recovered and joined shipmates in the chaos. Upon release from the military, having earned battle stars and honors, he returned to San Angelo where he soon joined the San Angelo Police Department. One year and two months later, at age 24, he lost his life when escorting a funeral in San Angelo. Freddie was single, eager to begin his life after war. He was looking forward to the time he could begin a family. He was a Christian who loved life. Sadly,it was not to be.
