Born to a Jewish father who was a professor of Education, his mother was Protestant, both his parents perished in Nazi concentration camps. As a result, he was raised by other various relatives. After graduating from Prague's Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, he initially wrote screenplays, prior to making his directing debut with the documentary "Magic Lantern II" (1960). He moved on to features in his native Czechoslovakia with "Black Peter" (1964) and became internationally recognized with the American comedy "Taking Off" (1971). Among his other film credits include "Hair" (1979), "Ragtime" (1981) and "The People vs. Larry Flynt" (1996).
