According to the Curia Homemakers Extension book published in 1987,

"Adeline Stephens James" was referred to as the midwife of Cedar Grove, attending many if not most of the births with which the community was blessed during her lifetime. The book notes that Tina James also helped in the traditional role of midwife and "Doctors were usually sent for, but sometimes results were just as well with women helping each other. "
