Umberto Collodi arrived in the United States in the early 1900's from Italy and worked, as a young man, in the agriculture fields of central California. After he had saved enough money, he purchased his own vineyard in Madera, California and sent word back to Italy for his betrothed (Rosa Lippi). They were married and had five children (Italia, Ardys, Elvira, Pearl, and Albert). The family remained in Madera, on the ranch, until Umberto's untimely death in 1949.
