Capt. Henry C. Burch, master of the schooner Susan Connor, was arrested yesterday, on the charge of causing the death of James Baker, a colored seaman of the schooner, on the voyage from Baltimore to Charleston, S. C., and back. The Susan Connor is a regular packet between the two ports, and it is charged that on the voyage hence to Charleston (the schooner sailing on the 22d of February,) the captain beat Baker with a belaying pin and stick of oak wood in the most severe manner, so that the blood came out of his nose and ears. On the 16th of March, on the return voyage, Baker died about 4 o’clock in the morning, from the injuries alleged to have been received at the hands of the captain. One of the crew testified that on the voyage home, as additional punishment to Baker, the captain had buckets of cold salt water thrown over him. Baker was about thirty years of age, and has a father and mother, he stated, living on Fell’s Point. His body was buried at sea. Capt. Burch was committed in default of the sum of $5,000 for his appearance at a further examination. “The New York Times”, New York, New York, Monday, 2 April 1855, p. 8
