FROM "Remembrance of Pioneers Past" BY PEGGY WARD ENGH:

James Tallmadge came to California as captain of a wagon train in 1849, landing in Placerville after traveling over the Sierras via the Donner Pass. He was not interested in mining, so he journeyed south to San Joaquin County in 1850 where he began to manufacture bricks in Stockton. He looked for land along the Mokelumne Rover and settled above Woodbridge where he owned two sections of land for raining stock, hay, and grain.

He was contacted by the Lodi Methodist Church to build a small church at Staples Ferry. With his mason and brick-making training, he was instrumental in the building of two brick Elliott Township landmarks - the Harmony Grove Church and the Dr. D.J. Locke home and granary.

With Dr. Dean J. Locke, Edwin Foster and George Locke, Mr. Tallmadge was a director of the Mokelumne Steam Navigation Company which invested in the cargo boat, the Pert, in the early 1860's. In 1879, he was involved in a terrible accident where he was thrown from a wagon and from which he never fully recovered.

The Tallmadges had seven children: Henry, Walter, Charles, Frank, Ida, the wife of John Fugit, Olive, the wife of Thomas Dean, and Ada, the wife of Arthur Huppman. The descendants of James and Mary Tallmadge dedicated Harmony Grove Church's Window II in memory of Bessie Dean Higginbotham, the daughter of Olive and Thomas Dean. Moreover, six pews in the church and the cypress trees were donated in memory of various Tallmadge descendants. The first funeral held in the restored church was for Bessie Dean Higginbotham, who died in 1973. Also buried here are Bessie Dean's husband, Enos Marion Higginbotham, and their son Earl R.

[NOTE: The Tallmadges had seven children that survived to adulthood; five died as infants/toddlers]
