British Royal Navy Admiral. As a junior officer he served on British Commodore George Anson's voyage around the world and commanded the landing party which sacked and burned the town of Paita, Peru in November 1741. During his naval career, he commanded the HMS Centurion, the HMS Lion, the HMS Yarmouth, the Royal Caroline, the HMS Cambridge, and the HMS Royal George. He participated in the Jacobite rising, the War of the Austrian Succession, and the Seven Years' War. From 1754 until 1774 he was a Member of Parliament, representing the constituency of Queenborough. In 1762 he was promoted to the rank of rear admiral. and in 1766 he was appointed to the Board of Admiralty as Senior Naval Lord in the Chatham ministry under Sir Edward Hawke, holding office until February 1770. In October 1770 he was promoted to the rank of vice admiral and to full admiral in January 1778.
