Victim of the General Slocum Fire - age 9 years old, death cert # 3031, lived at 340 East 9th Street∼Charles "Carl" Ohl, 8 years, was traveling with his older sister, Emily, and mother Elizabeth on a excursion held my the St. Mark's Evangelical Church. They boarded the General Slocum and headed out to a picnic on Locust Island. Shortly after leaving, the ship caught fire and began to sink.
Friends and family watching from the nearby shores immediately began to launch smaller boats and those who could swim, swam out to try and save lives. Many lives were saved this way, but the fire spread very quickly and Emily and Carl Ohl, perished.
Their mother, Elizabeth survived.
