Clifford Vetal Blanchard was born on a farm near Jefferson SD on May 23, 1920, and passed away September 25, 2017, in Freeman SD. He was the oldest son of the late Victor & Adwilda Blanchard.

Clifford graduated from Jefferson High School, Jefferson SD in 1938.

He married Betty Jean Betzer May 21, 1941, in Sioux City, Iowa. From this marriage were born 12 children.

Over his lifetime, he ran a service station, was a carpenter, farmed, sold Morman Feed, was Deputy Sheriff, Chief of Police, the Civil Defense Director, a Parole Officer, a Quality Control Specialist for Sioux Tool, and was an all-around handyman. He worked more than two jobs most of his life.

He lived in Jefferson SD from 1920-1947; 1947-1975 in Parker; 1975-1977 in Garretson SD; and 1977-1991 in Vermillion SD then 1991-2014, he went back to Parker.

He enjoyed working with wood, painting, and fixing antiques. He and Betty purchased the Tielman-Stoddard Home in Parker and worked very hard to retain its historical authenticity. He worked with his family in sports, and with horses, and enjoyed watching them perform whether it was sports or music or drama.

He was a City Councilman, a 4-H leader and was instrumental in starting a Little League in Parker, coaching many young men in the area who knew him as “Doc” Blanchard. He played baseball himself for many years and is in the South Dakota Baseball Hall of Fame.

He is survived by daughters: Marcia McGill (Jerry) of Fort Calhoun NE; Cherie Lunden (Les) of Sioux Falls SD; Virginia Connors (Pat) of Jefferson SD; Julie Pascoe (Lee) of Parker SD; Barbara Ice (Dwayne) of Rapid City SD; and Tracy (Steve) Lardinois of Parker CO; and sons: Lee (MaryAnn) of Rapid City SD; Rodney (Linda) of Oskaloosa IA; Roche (Ilene) of Rochester Hills MI; Joel (Dar) of Sioux Falls SD; and Greg (Diane) of Broomfield CO; and one brother, Victor (Salle) of Groveland CA, and sisters Sonia Chicoine of Sioux City IA and Danielle (Paul) Irwin, Jefferson SD. He is also survived by 18 granddaughters, 8 grandsons; 28 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 ½ years; a daughter, Lisa; his parents; a brother, Roger, and sisters Corrine Mollet and Vedeane Colt; 3 grandsons, Christopher Blanchard, Brent Blanchard, Darin Blanchard; and 2 son-in-laws, Terry Merritt and William Cvitak.
