OBITUARY: HELEN ROSE ANNO, 79, of St. Joseph, passed away September 21, 2017, at the Wathena Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
Helen was born December 25, 1937, south of Wathena, Kansas, to the late John and Ruth (Engeman) Kirkland. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband James Robert Anno who passed away February 29, 2016; two older brothers, Robert and Charles.
Helen graduated from Wathena High School in 1955. Following high School she attended Gard Business University in St. Joseph. Upon completion, she was employed by Dannen Mills where she worked until September of 1957. On September 6, Helen went to work at the Hillyard Company, having been hired to work in the Credit Department. Upon arrival, she was assigned to work in Hillyard/Eastern Sales where she worked for 20 years, serving as 5th floor Supervisor. In 1989 Helen became Administrative Services' Assistant coordinating bids, national accounts, foreign accounts, etc. Upon her retirement in 2002, she was serving as National Account Administrators and Executive Administrative Assistant. Helen saw changes from manual typewriters to memory typewriters, computers, copiers, fax machines, E-mails, latest telephone systems and many other positive changes and improvements. Helen felt she was blessed to have had the privilege of working with the Hillyard family for 45 years.
Helen was an active member of the Francis Street 1st United Methodist Church, the St. Joseph Garden Club, and the American Business Women's Association. She and her husband enjoyed square dancing and were members of the Tanglefoot Square Dance Club for many years. She enjoyed sports and had played softball in her younger days.
Helen is survived by brothers John and Donald (Brenda); sisters Ruth Grable, Erma Jones and Donna Mason, of Wathena, and sister Dorothy (George) Lester of Eugene, Oregon; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Suzanne Dougherty, Bedford, Iowa, nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 2:00-4:00 PM Sunday, September 24, 2017 at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel in St. Joseph.
Services: 10:30 AM Monday, September 25, 2017 at Wathena United Methodist Church, 4th & Jessie Street, Wathena, Kansas, 66090. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.
