In 1898 Kidston joined the regular army Permanent Force with the Royal Canadian Regiment, regt. #6452, Private. In May of that year he was transferred to the Yukon Field Force, a unit that was formed to help the NWMP during the Klondyke Gold Rush. He served there until summer 1900 when the unit was withdrawn back south. Kidston was sent to Fredericton, N.B. Around 1901, Kidston took his release and traveled to Edmonton, AB and worked there as a painter. He served in the militia there with the 19th Alberta Mounted Rifles until his death. He contracted pneumonia and passed away due to complications. His brother transported his body back to Nova Scotia for burial.
