Marietta, called Maria for short, LanFranchi was born on August 17, 1889 in Lesignano de Bagni, Parma, Emilia-Romagna, Italy to Francesco LanFranchi and Adelaide Berte. She had six siblings: Barbara LanFranchi (1887-1976), Giuseppina "Pina" LanFranchi (1889-1961), Angelina LanFranchi (1894-1948), Louis Angelo Franci (formerly Angelo LanFranchi, 1896-1967), Rosina LanFranchi (1903-2000), and Elena LanFranchi (died p 1967).

Sometime before September 1912, she is married to Giuseppe (Joseph) Berte, possibly in Parma. That month Giuseppe comes on the La Savoie, arriving in New York City, then heading to Barre, Vermont where he would be a stone cutter for years. At that time, Maria LanFranchi was living in Lesignano de Bagni. Sometime between 1913 and 1915, however, she begins living in Barre, with Guiseppe. She has at least three children with him:
- Ketri Berte (b. 1913) (1st child)
- Lina Maria Nita Berte (b. 1915) (2nd child)
- Ancilla Francesca Ermelinda Berte (b 1918) (3rd child)

In 1916, Giuseppe was a bearer for his sister Ermalinda Berte after her death, as was his brother Dino. The following year, he said he was living in Barre, Vermont with his wife and two children and that he needed to stay there for "family support" rather than fight in Europe, previously fighting in the Italian military.

In 1919, Giuseppe went back to Parma, part of an extended stay there, possibly with his daughter Ancilla. By May 1921, Giuseppe went to Wilmerding, then returned to Barre. Five years later, in 1926, Giuseppe dies. He seems to have a funeral in Berceto, Italy, although he likely died in Barre.

Maria lives for many more years. In 1953, she would visit her family in Casola. 10 years later, on March 8, 1963, she would die in Italy.

Her translated death notice (on Giuseppe's bio) would say

Example of conjugal devotion
and of maternal love.
I leave the beloved weeping children
to reach the spouse
in eternal life.
A prayer.

Original Italian:

Esempio di devozione coniugale
e di amore materno.
Lascio gli adorati figli piangenti
per raggogiungere il consorte
nella vita eterna.
Una preghiera.

Italian obit (translated):
