Robert Harold “Bob” Dhom, of Newton, Illinois, passed away at 4:26 PM – Monday, July 10, 2017 at Newton Care Center in Newton, Illinois surrounded by his loved ones.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:00 AM – Thursday, July 13, 2017, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton, Illinois with Fr. Dean Probst celebrating Mass. Burial will be in New St. Peter Cemetery in Newton, Illinois. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM – Wednesday, July 12, 2017, at the church and ½ hour prior to Mass. In loving memory of Bob, memorials may be made to the Jasper County Cancer Fund PO Box 333 Newton, Illinois 62448. Arrangements are under the care of the Meyer Funeral Home in Newton, Illinois.

Robert better known as “Bob” was born on January 25, 1925, in Decatur, Illinois, the son of John Harold and Ruth (Miller) Dhom. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and the Army Reserves in 1949, based in California.

Bob married Francella Mattingly on June 3, 1953, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton, Illinois, and she preceded him in death on August 14, 1991.

Bob was the parts supply manager at Al Rohr Chevrolet in Newton for many years and at Bud Mitchell Chevrolet in Greenup.

Bob was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton, Illinois. He was also a member in several organizations including the Knights of Columbus #1704 where he served as Grand Knight, the Jasper Post #20 American Legion, Jasper Amateur Radio Society, Emergency Management Agency, Civil Defense and State MARS serving as Director. Robert enjoyed gardening, geocaching, fishing, playing and restoring guitars. He was known by many for making great wine.

Mary Ann (Leonard) Kocher of Newton, Illinois; Robbie (Rick) Ginder of Stringtown, Illinois and Theresa (Greg) Zuber of Newton, Illinois

Foster daughter- Karla (Mike) Kremer of Effingham, Illinois

Grandchildren- Lori (Matt) Zumbahlen; Scott (Angie) Kocher; Jennifer (Andy) Bower; Nathan (Vicki) Ginder; Andy (Rachel) Zuber; Luke (Kim) Zuber; Doug Ginder; Hilary (Levi) Huddleston; Sarah Zuber and Katie (Brad) Gustafson.

15 Great grandchildren
Sisters- Betty (Ted) Ramelli of California and Judy (Larry) Huitt of Arizona.

Sister in law- Frances Dhom of Murfreesboro, Tennessee

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, wife Francella, granddaughter Holly Kocher, sisters June Ochs and Genevieve Shryock, brothers Herndon, Dean and infant brother Richard Dhom.
