Mr. Willard Mahanes, 82, of Smallwood, Maryland died Sunday, February 25, 2007, at Westminster Nursing and Rehabilitative Center, after an extended illness.

Born March 5, 1924, in Cismont, Virginia, he was the son of the late Samuel Timothy and Lilith Broadhead Mahanes. He was the husband of Mabel L. Mahanes, his wife of 30 years.

Mr. Mahanes was a 1941 graduate of McIntire High School, Charlottesville, Virginia. He was employed with Albemarle County, Virginia public schools, from 1941 until 44, maintaining buses and other vehicles. In 1944 Willard joined the United States Army, serving in the 531st Ordnance Tank Maintenance Company as foreman of the automotive repair shop. He also served with Furth Ordnance Center of the 70th Ordnance Group, where he supervised 900 German civilians and 200 enlisted men in Germany, maintaining equipment which backed up General George S. Patton's Third Army. Willard was employed with H. M. Gleason Company of Charlottesville from 1949 until 1967 in the parts department; from 1967 until 1982 in district sales over four states with Simplicity Manufacturing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; from 1982 until 1989 with Taylor Outdoor Power Equipment of Westminster in sales at the parts counter; and from 1990 until 2001 with Westminster Auto Parts in parts delivery.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are daughter, Patricia Rohm of Charlottesville; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Nancy Mahanes of Virginia Beach, Virginia; stepdaughters, Teresa Kohlman of Taneytown; Judy M. John of near Westminster; Nancy Owings and her husband, Harry, of near New Windsor; stepson, J. Jay John and his wife, Sheila, of Fallston; brother, Vivian Mahanes of Charlottesville; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by seven brothers.

A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, March 1, 2007, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 310 Church Street, New Windsor, Maryland, with the Reverend Scott Duffey, his pastor, officiating. Interment will be at Pipe Creek Cemetery near Linwood.
