Worked on steamboats on the Mississippi River.

Died on "Texas Island," an island in the Mississippi River in Adams county Illinois. His grandson lived there. A coroner's inquest ruled cause of death was "dropsy."

From an article dated 15 February 1910, The Quincy Daily Herald: "According to the statement of the old gentleman, his father was a soldier in the Revolution, and was granted bounty lands covering what is now the site of Cincinnati, and which the deceased often alleged could be claimed by himself and his brothers and sisters."

Surviving to mourn his loss were: his son Mahlon Seward; his daughter Mrs. Minnie Fogel; and his grandson John Seward.
