8th Prime Minister of South Korea. He served from May 10, 1964 to December 20, 1970. Prior to becoming prime minister, he attended Japanese military school since Japan still occupied Korea. He then became a member of the Manchukuo Imperial Army. He later graduated from the first class of the Korea Military Academy in 1946 and was commissioned into the South Korean army. At the beginning of the Korean War, he was in Hawaii for military training. He returned to Korea and was made a general. He was made commander of the Republic of Korea Army. His military genius made him a national hero. After retirement, he served as South Korea's ambassador to Turkey. In 1960 he was appointed ambassador to France and then served as ambassador to the United States from 1960 to 1961 and 1962 to 1963. From 1963 to 1964 he served as Foreign Minister of South Korea and finally, prime minister. Beginning in 1971, he served as a member of the National Assembly from the Democratic Republican Party for three consecutive terms. He also served as chairman in the National Assembly from 1973 to 1979. In March of 1991 he was treated for lymph cancer in Hawaii. During the 1992 Korean presidential election, he was re-hospitalized in Hawaii in January of 1994 for cancer and died there.
