Reported age at time of death was 59 years, so evidently born about 1816. Said to be son of Arthur and Martha Middy (SIMS) ENNIS, who died in South Carolina. Married ca. 1833 to Martha TOMMEY.

Mary Jane Galer's list of persons interred in the New Cemetery area of Linwood shows: Jas. ENNIS, male, died aged 59 years; buried 03 FEB 1875 (no section or lot number reported) - Sexton Abraham ODOM. Galer's source was the sexton's card file (an index). Entry in the sexton' burial ledger shows James was born in South Carolina; it doesn't report his cause of death (newspaper reports erisipelas on the brain) or the location of his grave but reports he was buried as a non-resident of Columbus.

Per 1870 federal census "outside the city of Columbus" in Muscogee County, Georgia, Dwelling #1182,. household #1272:
ENNIS, James, male, 56 SC, wholesale and retail hardware merchant+
(ENNIS) Martha, female, 47 GA, keeping house
(ENNIS) Henry, male, 20 GA, clerk in hardware store
(ENNIS) Wlliam, male, 18 GA, at school
(ENNIS) Lyman, male, 16 GA, at school
(ENNIS) Lily, female, 8 GA
DeVORE, Thomas, male, 34 GA,. Crockery Retail Store, $3,000, $6,000
(DeVORE), Sarah, female, 27 GA, at home
[+ real estate valued at $22,000, personal estate valued at $15,000. Question: considering how well situated he was in 1870, and presumably up to his death in 1875, why doesn't he, or his widow, have an inscribed grave marker?]

Widow, children & grandchildren:
Per 1880 federal census of Militia District 772 (Nances District, which corresponds with Land District 8), Dwelling 6, Household 6 (all persons and parents born in GA):
ENNIS, Martha (head),widowed female, aged 55, keeping house.
(ENNIS) Henry, son, single male, aged 30 years, gardener.
(ENNIS) William, son, single, male, aged 28 years, gardener.
(ENNIS) Lyman, son, single, male, aged 26, gardener.
(ENNIS) Lilly, daughter, single female, aged 18 years, at home.
DEVORE, Sallie, daughter, widowed female, aged 32 years, sewing.
(DEVORE) Lula, granddaughter, female, aged 4 years.
(DEVORE) James, grandson, male, aged 2 years.

This grave is probably not identifiably marked. It is presumably in the lot where his children, Thomas Lyman ENNIS and Mrs. Sallie (ENNIS) DEVORE, have marked graves and son William has an unmarked grave. This lot encompasses city lots A-1 and A-2, and perhaps A-1 1/2 & A-2 1/2. This family lot is Lot 68 of Section A in Dolores Autry's "Historic Linwood Cemetery" book (edited by Lea Dowd et al.), Volume 1, p. 48.

Cemetery records indicate that James ENNIS owned Lots 1, 2, 3, & 4 in Section A, and that Sallie DEVORE owned lots 1 1/2, 2 1/2, 3 1/2, 4 1/2, 5 1/2, and 6 1/2 in Section A (the list of lot owners I have doesn't give date or price of purchase for this section).
