Texas Patriot Erastus " Deaf " Smith, was an American frontiersman noted for his part in the Texas Revolution and the army of the Republic of Texas. Erastus Smith was the son of Chilab and Mary Smith. In 1798 his parents moved to Mississippi and settled near Natchez. Erastus first visited Texas in 1817, he returned in 1821 and made his headquarters at Bexar. A year later he married Guadalupe Ruiz Duran, widow of Vincente Duran. The couple had four children, Susan Concepcion (1823-1849), Gertrudes (1825-1868), Travis (1827-1833), and Simona (1829-1890). He served as a guide, scout, soldier, and spy. He fought at the Grass Fight, the Battle at Concepcion, and the Battle of San Jacinto. After the war, Deaf Smith led a company of Texas Rangers. Deaf Smith County in Texas, is named in his honor.
