Danish king. Approximate year of birth. He reigned 1095-1103. His mother is unknown. He wanted Denmark to be a free church province and went to Rome to see the Pope about that in 1098. He and Queen Bodil, his wife, were on a crusade to Jerusalem when he died in Cyprus. She made it to their destination but died there. He had attended the Three King's Meeting in 1101 with the rulers of Norway and Sweden hosted by King Ingold the Elder of Sweden. There is a Royal Summit monument with a modern statue of the three kings in Kungälv, Sweden. During his lengthy absences from Denmark one of his sons ran the country and was much maligned for violence and piracy.
