Daniel Gage, Lowell's "ice and woodman," died on Feb. 9, 1901. Born in Pelham in 1828, he came to Lowell in 1855 and established an ice business that expanded to include the supply of wood and lumber to Lowell and the area. According to the Sunday Herald, "Mr. Gage was one of the most unique personalities in Lowell. His industry was indefatigable and his self-application to his business was incessant. He was up early and returned home late, driving a substantial carryall or sleigh, and in winter enveloped in a big buffalo robe. Yet, although he was so busy, he often stopped his carriage or sleigh to fill it with school children and give them a ride."
