Born in Dollar, Clackmannanshire, Scotland in a poor family, he went to sea and rose to Captain his own ship. He made his fortune trading in London. He bequeathed £60,000 to build a school for the poor of the village of Dollar. However the money was used to create an academy to educate boys and girls of the surrounding area. The school opened in 1818 and was called The Dollar Institution, later renamed the Dollar Academy.
During the 1930's McNabb's crypt was found below a meeting house at Mile End in London. His remains were cremated and were placed in a niche above the bronze school doors at the Academy.
