Magdalena was the elder of 2 daughters born to Adam and Magdalena Polonis. Her parents emigrated to the US, in the early 1890's and settling in Worcester Massachusetts with other Lithuanian families. A sister Isabella was born in 1898 in Worcester. Magdalena Avietėnaitė is one of the most prominent women of the Republic of Lithuania (1918-1940). She was probably the only woman who had a high level position in the state apparatus before pre-war Lithuania. Since 1920 M.Avietėnaitė worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). After starting to work in modest positions, she later became the director of Elta, the Press Office, Press Department. Through her hands all the information about Lithuania from abroad was transmitted, the department under her guidance made Lithuania famous in the world.
She retired to the Lithuanian Convent in Putnam, CT but always kept in close contact with her many close cousins in Worcester.
