Antonia AKA Antonina Szczepankiewicz

The Polish surname of Szczepankiewicz translates into the English language as "Stevens".

Her only child, a daughter, was born March 1, 1888 in Poland. Her name was Josephine (or Josepha) and she adopted her mother's maiden name of Szczepankiewicz. Antonina was unmarried when Josephine was born and our family never learned the name of her father. Antonina was my maternal great-grandmother and,her daughter Josephine was my grandmother.

Grave records of Calvary Cemetery in Lorain, Ohio were used as a resource when ordering the tombstone for Antonina Szczepankiewicz. Her name is listed as "Antonia" and age 56 for her age. I've since learned that her name is spelled as "Antonina" and that her actual birthdate is April 26, 1858, in Milaczew, Poland.

Antonina is buried in Section 3A, grave 11 in an area of the cemetery where primarily flat stones mark the graves. We think she has the best looking one there as the stone was placed for her in 2001.

The following birth information is from LDS microfilm Roll # 2161267. Thanking Julie Szczepankiewicz and Joe Malachowski for sharing and interpreting Antonina's birth record:

"Antonina's baptismal record for you: Miłaczew. 19. On the second of May in the 1st hour of the afternoon I baptized a child named Antonina, daughter of Józef Szczepankiewicz, age 45, and Petronella … (, age 35, born on the 26th day of April in the 10th hour at night. Godparents were Jakob Turkowski (?) and Tekla (?) Maniewska (?) of Miłaczew. The word "Miłaczew" in the margin of the document usually indicates the village where the baby was actually born, since it's understood that the baptism took place at the parish church, which in this case is in Złotków. The number 19 signifies that Antonina was the 19th baby baptized in the parish that year. They just numbered them chronologically and then used those numbers to create an annual index. The Latin's pretty easy once you get the hang of the priest's handwriting."
