Private Paul Czeftczick was well known in Bakersfield as Paul Sheffield, as he took the shorter name owing to the difficulty encountered in using his family name. He was employed in the Kern County oilfields by W. W. Colm. He saw active service in France as a member of Company B, 144th machine gun Battalion. He was the first resident of Bakersfield that was killed in World War I.

“Paul Czeftzick, age 27, left Bakersfield for Camp Kearney on June 26, 1918, entering as a Private. After passing examinations he was transferred to the 144th Machine Gun Battalion. After six weeks of training he was ordered to France. Leaving New York on August 10th he arrived safely in France. After receiving mail from him which showed his interest of the country we received the sorrowful news by telegram of his death due to influenza. Paul was buried with military honors at Grossovre, Iher, France, on October 10, 1918. By: William Czeftzick, brother, 1520 24th Street, Bakersfield, April 7, 1919.”

Newspaper Clipping: “Private Paul Czeftzick was a gallant and enthusiastic young soldier. He was a member of the One Hundred and Forty-fourth Machine Gun Battalion. It was on June 26, 1918, that he entered the service of Uncle Sam. For eight years previous he had been in the employ of the Sacramento Oil Company. Six weeks of training sufficed for the young man and he was sent to France. He never reached the front line. He wrote home to his wife and mother from France that he was well and happy. The last letter was wired from Washington of his sudden death from influenza. The family expect more details daily of the sad event. Besides his widow Mr. Czeftzick is survived by his mother, Mrs. Cynthia Czeftzick of 1520 Twenty-fourth Street and his sisters, Mrs. J.A. Heath of this city; Mrs. Elsie Walters, Anna Owens, and brothers William and Herman of the Kern River Oil fields.”
