John Horky Jr. was born 06 Nov. 1910 in Yonkers NY. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Horky and grew up with his three sisters: Anna, Helen and Mary, on Mulberry Street. As a young man, He worked as a as a golf caddy and won numerous golf tournaments. Later in life he was employed at the Alexander Smith and Sons Carpet Company. John Jr. was an active member of the Boilermakers Athletic Club and was a well know athlete in Yonkers playing for such teams as the Hollows, Boilermakers, Smith Carpet Company and other teams. On 29 April 1941, John Jr. married Stella Kruck at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. The couple moved to 118 Herriot Street, then 178 Riverdale Ave, before settling at 34 Clinton Street. John Horky Jr. was working at the carpet factory when He was called to service by draft board 731 on May 15th, 1942. When John Jr. left for the service, his wife Stella was pregnant with their son, John Horky 3rd, He would never get to meet his son.
After training, Pvt. Horky was assigned with the 135th Regiment 34th Infantry Division. Private Horky was sent to North Africa by way of Northern Ireland. Pvt. Hoky was in combat during the North African campaign. During the Tunisian campaign (also known as the Battle of Tunisia), 28 April 1943, Private John Horky Jr. was Killed in Action. He was 32 years old. A memorial service was held in Trinity Church. A Tribute was paid to Private John Horky Jr., by the United Athletic Clubs of the Hollow at Hollow Park on Ashburton Ave and Walnut Street. In 1949 Pvt. John Horky Jr. remains were returned to the States. He was laid to rest in Oakland cemetery. In 1954, The City of Yonkers named a Park on Mulberry Street in his honor.
