Douglas Howard Peel was born on August 4th 1948 in the military hospital at March Air Force Base in Riverside California. Growing up, Doug's father had a career in the US military. Accordingly, Doug lived with his family in various US states and two foreign countries.

Doug attended elementary school in Bangor, Maine, junior high school at the Nouasseur AF Base in Casablanca, Morocco, and high school back in Bangor, Maine. He was baptized in 1955 in Bangor, Maine and became a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in 1962.

As a boy, Doug was kind and considerate. His middle name was a tribute to his maternal grandfather for whom he always showed a special love. He was member of the Boy Scouts of America.

As a teen, Doug loved sports and the outdoors. He could be found ice-skating, hunting, fishing, and swimming. He swam in Halls Quarry on Mount Desert Island in Maine; he became a Qualified Skin Diver and Scuba Diver at just 16 years old. Doug went on to receive a Red Cross Lifesaving and Water Safety certification.

As a man, Doug had an intense interest in all things mechanical. Now living in the state of Florida, he was certified as a Professional Tractor-Trailer Operator. His technical aptitude showed while studying at the George T. Baker Aviation School where Doug won scholastic awards and recognition, including the 1986-87 South Florida P.A.M.A Scholarship. In April of 1987, Doug received his FAA Aviation Airframe Mechanic certification and was awarded the "Most Outstanding Airframe Student" trophy. That summer, he received his FAA Power Plant Mechanics certification and was awarded the "Most Outstanding Power Plant Student" trophy. He received his Federal Aviation Administration Airframe and Power Plant license in October 1987.

In 1989, Doug decided to follow his real passion for automotive service and repair. He graduated from the Automotive Transmission School, and began his own business "Peel Repair". It gave Doug the greatest satisfaction to bring his technical ability into a personal service where he could work one-on-one with people.

Doug met Jan, his future wife and life's love, through a mutual friend in 1977. Unbeknownst to them at the time, they lived around the corner from each other, and Jan had been a long time newspaper customer of his brother. It must have been meant to be.

Douglas was a long time member of the National Rifle Association and a Charter Member of the Golden Eagles that advocated gun responsibility and safety. He enjoyed target shooting, football, and basketball. In his passion for travel in the USA and in Europe, he developed many friends from all over the world and kept in touch with them throughout his life.
