He emigrated to America with his second wife, Annie (Scotcher) and his daughters Lucy, from his first marriage, and Alice in July of 1868 aboard the S.S. Colorado; arriving in Salt Lake City in September.

His daughters Rosetta and Elizabeth “Eliza” had immigrated the year before. While Rosetta had died earlier, John arrived in time to see his daughter Eliza baptized into the LDS church and married in 1870 to John Fenton Shields.
