Funeral services for Mr. David R. Pulver, 98, will be held Monday, October 3, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Jennings, with Bro. Jeff Cook officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Miguez Funeral Home with full military honors by American Legion Post 19 Honor Guard.
Visitation will be held Sunday, October 2, 2016, in the funeral home chapel from 2:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Visitation will resume at First Baptist Church Monday morning from 8:00 a.m. until service time.
Mr. Pulver died Friday, September 30, at 12:35 a.m. in Jennings.
Mr. Pulver was born May 17, 1918 in Jennings, Louisiana. He attended Jennings schools where he played football under Coach Jerry Simmons in 1936 and 1937. He was employed by the Jennings News from 1937 to 1941 as printer's devil with Clint Patterson and Leo Devall.
In 1937, Mr. Pulver joined the United States Troop K-108th Horse Calvary Jennings National Guard and was discharged in 1940 as Private First Class. He joined the United States Navy on December 26, 1941, two weeks after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. He spent four years in the Pacific theatre. He was at the Battle of Midway, Milne Bay, New Guinea, Guam and Saipan and was discharged in 1947 as Machinist Mate First Class.
Mr. Pulver performed on harmonica with the singing group The Goldenaires who played memorable melodies of the 1930's, 40's and 50's. When Mr. Pulver was serving aboard ship in the Pacific during WW II, his mother sent him a 35 cent harmonica. Thus began his passion for playing the harmonica as he played for the sailors and marines at Midway Island.
Mr. Pulver graduated from Isaac Delgado Junior College in 1950 as a machinist. He was employed by Avondale Ship Yard in New Orleans for four years. From September 1953 until 1980, Mr. Pulver was a machine shop instructor at the Jefferson Davis Trade School. He continued his education at USL, LSU, McNeese State and Northwestern State Colleges.
Mr. Pulver was a Boy Scout Master and Assistant Scout Master from 1955 to 1962 for Troop 65. He was a member and Deacon of The First Baptist Church of Jennings. Mr. Puylver kept very busy as a member of 'Baptist Young at Heart' and led and assisted the Nursing Home Ministries sing-a-long playing the harmonica and singing in French.
He served as President of the First Derrick Campers Club from 1975 through 1976.
He was a member of VFW Post 3686, American Legion Post 19, and the Retired Teachers Association.
Mr. Pulver is survived by his daughters, Charlene (John) Veuleman of Roanoke and Martha "P-Nut" Pulver Wood of Keller, Texas; a son, David Calvin Pulver (Bonnie) of Baton Rouge; one sister, Minerva Kuttner of Missouri City, Texas; eight grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Metha Meyer Pulver; his parents, Orville Roscoe Pulver and Frances Lillian Church; two sisters, Esther Pulver and Ruth Coker; and two brothers, Alvin Pulver and Calvin Pulver.
