William Bursey was born in Old Perlican, Newfoundland (then an English colony) to fisherman Stephen(b.1864-d.?) & Lydia(nee Stanford b.1862-d.1894) Bursey. After the death of his mother in 1894 from tuberculosis, William was primarily raised by his father's mother, Rachel Bursey, the wife of fisherman Isaac Bursey (b.1835-d.?).
William was one of the lighthousekeepers for a lighthouse that stood on Old Perlican Island.
William married Bertha Martin of Harbour Grace(b.1898-d.1927) in 1919 and had 3 children: Monica Grace, Lucy Velma & Graham (who was killed while serving in the Royal Navy during WWII, at age 21). 2 years after the death of his first wife, William married Ethel Tryphena "Triffie" Hiscock of Victoria on March 20, 1930; William and Triffie raised 4 children: Clyde Shenstone (b.1930), Helen M. (b.1933-d.1948), Adelaide Jean (b.1940) & Lester Graham (b.1950-d.2021).
William served in both World Wars I & II, earning him the nick-name locally of "War Will".
William died from cancer on the 23 of June 1967, and is buried next to his second wife, Triffie, who died in 1990, and his half-brother, Joshua (b.1905-d.1969).
