John F. Claywell was my great grandfather. His daughter Minnie Eva Claywell (Chrisman - Martin - Bandy) was my grandmother.

He was born near Winchester, Scott County, Illinois to Jasper and Permelia Claywell.

He was raised to be a farmer and was listed as a farmer on the 1870 and 1880 census.

He married Martha Appolonia New Claywell and they had three children.

He is listed as a salesman in the trucking industry on the 1910 census.

He passed from this earth to his heavenly home on October 8, 1916 in Winchester, Scott County, Illinois.
He left behind his wife, Martha along with his 2 sons, William Jack and Joseph Carl and his daughter Minnie Eva and two grandsons. John Thomas Claywell and Floyd Chrisman ( later addopted and becoming Floyd Martin)

The headstone indicates he passed away in 1917, however all records from the state of Illinois say he passed away October 7, 1916 and was laid to rest on October 9, 1916 in Winchester City Cemetery.

My father, Floyd Martin, who at that time was known as Floyd Chrisman, was 6 years and 7 days old. He and my grandmother lived with John and Martha Claywell since Charles C. Chrisman ( my dad's birth father) was no longer around.

I often wonder if daddy remembered his grandfather. I know he did not know his grandfather or grandmother on the Chrisman side.

I can only hope and pray that he knew and remembered his Claywell grandparents. They were very good to my grandmother and daddy. I wish I could have known them. I have so many questions and not all of the answers.

I know I am a Claywell and I am proud to have that bloodline. I hope that would make Grandpa Claywell happy.
