Admiral of the Fleet, Royal Navy. Sir Henry Keppel was the son of William Charles Keppel, 4th Earl of Albemarle and Hon. Elizabeth Southwell. He first married Katherine Louisa Crosbie, daughter of General Sir John Gustavus Crosbie and Frances Page Thomas, on 25 February 1839. He secondly married Jane Elizabeth West, daughter of Martin John West, on 31 October 1861. He served in the Crimean War, and commanded British naval forces in the destruction of a Chinese Fleet on 1 June 1857. He held the office of Groom-in-Waiting to Her Majesty Queen Victoria between 1859 and 1860. He was appointed a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (G.C.B.), and awarded the Order of Merit (O.M.) and an honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Laws (D.C.L.) Sir Henry had two children by Jane Elizabeth West: Admiral Sir Colin Richard Keppel (1862-1947), and Maria Walpole Keppel (1865-1952).
