Born on a Wednesday passed on a Wednesday.

John William Adams, Junior,88, better known as "Cotton", went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, August 10, 2016.

Preceding him in death were his parents, John W. Adams, Senior and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Ashley Adams; his wife of 45 years, Maxine M. McMurry Adams; a son, Dickie McMurry; and a sister, Margie A. Evers.

Born in Roseland, Nelson County, Virginia Wednesday November 7, 1928, John was the youngest of three children. Isabel A. McDermott of Lakeland, Florida is his oldest sister at 92 years old. He grew up surrounded by love at home, in the close knit community of Roseland, Nelson County, Virginia and his church Bethlehem United Methodist where he was a member all his life.


Right after Nelson County , Virginia high school graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy serving from 1948 – 1951 at which time he served during the Korean Conflict in the Mediterranean aboard the heavy cruiser, U.S.S. Newport News CA-128. He was a dedicated and lifetime member of the Withers Hughes VFW Post.

John worked at the American Cyanamid Company from approximately 1952-1970 until he left to become a self-employed electrical, plumbing, and heating contractor of which he was for 35 years.

Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Mike McMurry and wife, Becky, Roseland, Virginia, Debbie McLeod and husband, Robert, Gilbert, S.C., Susan Bennett and husband, Barry, Lynchburg, Va., and Sarah Wood, Arrington, Va.; his cherished niece, Nancy Powell, and niece, Mary Elizabeth Stevens; his six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and beloved companion and friend, Burnley Harvey.

The family would like to give their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the Hospice of the Piedmont, especially Nurse Nancy Campbell and Social Worker Edith Thomas for the care, love, and support. Hospice is truly an extension of God's love for us to add quality of life to our earthly journey.

Arrangements are being handled by Byrum Parr Funeral Home in Roseland, Nelson County, Virginia.

The family asked instead of flowers to make a contribution to the Hospice of the Piedmont Attn: Development Office, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, Virginia 22911, or to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 7539 Patrick Henry Hwy., at P.O. Box 278, Roseland, Virginia 22967.

The family received friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday night, August 11, 2016, at the funeral home. A celebration of life will be held at Bethlehem United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Friday, August 12, 2016, with the burial to follow at the church cemetery. After the burial, there will be a time of fellowship in the church social hall.
