Social Reformer and Manufacturer. He was known as the first to manufacture alpaca fabrics in England. He built a vast mill at Saltaire, three miles from Bradford, West Yorkshire. He cared for the social well - being of his many employees, constructing a village at Saltaire which included residential accomodation, a church, school and community center. His funeral was attended by 100,000 people.
