Rebel. He was the leader of the historical English Peasants' Revolt of 1381. After an early career in the British Army where he assisted at naval engagements against France and Spain, he then thought he was to retire to a quite life in the village of Boxley, Essex, becoming The Village Smith. In 1381, the common people were upset because the court system had no time for the affairs of peasants'. Reacting to high poll tax demands by Parliament, Tyler led rebels on London. There he met King Richard 11 at Mile End in East London to discuss the peasants' greivances. After remonstrating with King Richard 11, the Lord Mayor of London stepped forward and struck a blow with his sword on the unarmed Tyler. The body was then stabbed by one of King's squires' - John Sandwich. The rebellion ended shortly after Tyler's death. He was then buried without ceremony or marked grave at place of death.
