Composer. He won an Emmy Award for his music from the 1989 television mini-series "Lonesome Dove." He began his career during the early 1970s writing music for television movies and would often work with director John Milius on such films as "Big Wednesday" (1978). During the 1980s, he became well known for his forceful compositions for such films as: "Conan the Barbarian" (1982), "RoboCop" (1987) and "Split Decisions" (1988). During this period, he began a frequent collaboration with director Paul Verhoeven. His other notable works include: "The Blue Lagoon" (1980), "Conan the Destroyer" (1984), "Red Dawn" (1984), "Iron Eagle" (1986), "The Hunt for Red October" (1990), "Quigley Down Under" (1990), "Flight of the Intruder" (1991), "White Fang" (1991), "Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man" (1991), "Hot Shots! Part Deux" (1993), "Free Willy" (1993), "RoboCop 3" (1993), "On Deadly Ground" (1994), "Serial Mom" (1994), "Lassie" (1994), "The Jungle Book" (1994), "It's My Party" (1996), "The War at Home" (1996), "Breakdown" (1997), "Switchback" (1997), "Starship Troopers" (1997), "Mickey Blue Eyes" (1999) and "For Love of the Game" (1999). He also composed and conducted the music for the film "Les Miserables" (1998). He died at his home in Los Angeles from lung cancer. He was 61.
