Tatsy is he hospital's tiniest 25 oz.,but she lived.
A 16 - WEEK - OLD baby, who weighed only 25 ounces when born, is the Brisbane Women's Hospital's smallest surviving premature baby. 'Tatsy,' to the staff, she is Tatjana Slipczenko, the daughter of a New Australian couple, Mr. and Mrs.Iwan Slipczenko, of Neville Street, Kangaroo Point. She is one of the smallest surviving premature babies in Queensland. Now nearly 6 lb. Tatsy's birth weight equalled about 1½ lb. of butter. She now weighs nearly 6lb. She was born almost four months prematurely, and was kept in a special oxygen crib in an airconditioned nursery. When she weighed 5lb she was moved to the premature nursery. The average weight of a normal baby is about 7½lb. Normal babies weighing between 5lb.4oz. and 6lb are generally regarded as 'frail' babies, and go into a special 'frail nursery' Only a specially trainee staff handle underweight premature babies. Tatsy was kept in cotton wool and was fed a glucose mixture by tube every three hours for her first 24 hours. She received two blood transfusions— one when she weighed 2¾lb and another when she weighed 5lb. In the oxygen crib the flow of oxygen was checked every few minutes, and her temperature every few hours. Her parents, who speak only broken English, have two other children — a boy aged 4½ and a girl aged 2. Tatsy will go to the Maternal and Child Welfare Centre at St. Paul's Terrace early in the New Year. Mr. and Mrs. Slipczenko are living with their two children in one tiny room and sharing bathroom and kitchen. Through a 'telephone interpreter,Mrs. Slipczenko said last night she was thrilled about the baby, but was worried about their cramped quarters. 'Five of us will all be sleeping in one room,' she said. She had seen Tatsy four times and thought she was 'the sweetest baby. We are longing to have her home,' she added.
