Bud Fugate was born 11 July 1892 in Mortons Gap, son of Comadore and Martha Bell Pidcock Fugate. He had at least six siblings: Emma, John Edwards, Bob, Bessie, Georgia and Shelby Thomas. Bud served in the military during World War I and was a farmer/coal miner the majority of his life.

In 1921, Bud married Lillie Page, daughter of Augustus G Page and Sallie Mabrey Page. They had three children: Thomas Ray and stillborn twins Derrel Deen and Jerl Jean*. His wife Lillie died three days after the birth of the twins on 14 August 1928.

By 1940, he married Laura Etta Vanderveer, daughter of General Sherman Vanderveer and Claudia Eva Cotton Vanderveer.

Bud died on 30 March 1944 in the Veterans Administration Hospital, in Murfreesboro, TN at age 51.
