Albert "Al" Heath, 90, of Palatka, died Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006, at St. Augustine Health & Rehabilitation Center in St. Augustine following an extended illness.
He was born in Harvey, W.Va., and had been a resident of Palatka for the past 51 years, coming from Mount Hope, W.Va. He worked in the coal mines in the Beckley, W.Va. area as a teenager before entering the military. After returning from the military, he returned to the coal mines in Beckley for a short time before moving to Minnesota to work as a farmer. He later returned to Beckley to work again in the coal mines before moving to Palatka. He retired in 1980 as a rewinder operator in tissue converting at Georgia-Pacific Corp. in Palatka after 25 years of service. While working at GP he also farmed and ranched. He attended the First Presbyterian Church of Palatka. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post No. 3349 in Palatka and had belonged to the Putnam Cattleman's Association. He loved the outdoors.

He was preceded in death by his son, Albert Gregory Heath; his parents, John and Hannah Heath; one grandson, John Sampson Heath; four sisters and one brother.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Helen Heath of Palatka; one son and daughter-in-law, John H. (Nancy) Heath of Palatka; one daughter and son-in-law, Linda S. (John B.) Smith of Lake City; five grandchildren, Cindy Gardner (James) of Sanford, Kimberly Roberts (Josh) of Houston, Cathy Smith-Stewart of Lake City, Joey Heath of Orlando and Amy Tillis (Daniel) of Harlem; and seven great-grandchildren, Hannah and Caleb Gardner, Hunter Roberts, Courtney Smith-Stewart and Courtney, Mackenzie and Allison Tillis.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral_home. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, at Masters Funeral Home of Palatka, with the Rev. Robert Bronkema officiating. Interment will follow in Palatka Memorial Gardens with military honors bestowed by U. S. Army.
